Joined Politics as General Secretary DCC (I), Wokha 1990-92; entered and contested in State General Election from 40-Bhandari A/c as an Independent Party in 1982 but lost; again contested from the same Constituency in 2003 but lost as Congress-I. In 1998 General Election i.e. the 9th Nagaland Legislative Assembly he contested from 40-Bhandari Assembly Constituency as Congress-I Candidate and won. In 2008 he was elected to the 11th Nagaland Legislative Assembly from 37-Tyui Assembly Constituency as BJP Candidate and appointed as Parliamentary Secretary, Geology & Mining, and Irrigation & Flood Control & Border Affairs; re-elected to the 12th Assembly from 37-Tyui Assembly Constituency held on 23th February 2013 as NPF Candidate and appointed Minister for Forest & Border Affairs on 5th March 2013; yet again with a major reshuffle in the Ministry appointed as Home Minister in the year 2014; Re-elected to the 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly from the same Assembly Constituency-37  Tyui on BJP Party ticket election held on 27th February 2018 and appointed Deputy Chief Minister with Home Portfolio and National Highways. He is also the Leader of BJP Legislature Party (BJPLP) w.e.f 5th March 2018.
