President Zeliangrong Students Union, Kohima, 1975-79; General Secretary, Zeliangrong action Committee, 1982-86; General Secretary, Zeliangrong Youth Organisation, 1982-85.
Joined active politics as:
President, District Youth Congress (I) 1976-78; contested to the 5th Nagaland Legislative Assembly in 1982 from 6-Tening Assembly Constituency as an Independent Candidate but lost; re-contested to the 6th Assembly in 1987 on NNDP ticket but lost; re-contested to the 7th Assembly in 1989 as NPC Candidate and won and appointed Minister for Information & Public Relations, Tourism, Parliamentary Affairs; re-elected to the 8th Assembly, 1993 on INC ticket and appointed as Minister for Relief and Rehabilitation; re-elected to the 9th Assembly, 1998 on INC ticket and subsequently appointed Minister for Forest, Environment and Wildlife; re-elected to the 10th Assembly, 2003 on INC ticket and appointed as Geology & Mining; defected to National Congress on 27th June 2003 and later merged to NPF party on 30th June, 2003; on being elected as Member of Rajya Sabha in 2004 he vacated his seat and held the post till 2008; re-elected to the 11th Nagaland Legislative Assembly in 2008 from 7-Peren Assembly Constituency on NPF ticket and appointed as Minister for Planning & Co-ordination, Evaluation, Veterinary and Animal Husbandry, Parliamentary Affairs, Again elected to the 12th Assembly held on 23rd February 2013 and appointed as Minister for Planning & Co-ordination, Evaluation & Geology & Mining on 5th March 2013. Appointed as Chief Minister on 24th May 2014 but resigned on moral ground on 19th February 2017 due to breakdown in Law and Order on 33% Women Reservation issue in the Urban Local Bodies (ULB) however regained the Chief Minister seat on 19 July 2017 till 6th March 2018. Re-elected to the 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly on NPF Party ticket election held on 27th February 2018 and appointed Leader of Opposition (NPF Party).
