President, UDF Party, Kohima District 1974; President, UDF Party, 1976-77; Member, All India Congress Committee, 1993-2002; Founding Member, Naga People’s Front, 2002; Advisor & Member Working Committee, Naga People’s Front,2003-2014; Convenor, NDPP Parliamentary Board, 2018.
Contested in the 6th General Election from Northern Angami-II Assembly Constituency as an Independent Candidate held in November, 1987 but lost; re-contested and elected to the 7th General Election held in January 1989 on Congress (I) ticket and appointed as Minister for Sports & School Education and subsequently as Cabinet Minister for Higher & Technical Education, Art & Culture, also served as Chairman NIDC, NKVIB and Development Authority of Nagaland; re-elected to the 8th Nagaland Legislative Assembly on Congress (I) ticket election held in February 1993 and appointed Minister for Works & Housing; re-elected unopposed in the 9th Nagaland Legislative Assembly on Congress (I) ticket election held on 23rd February 1998 and appointed Minister for Home; later resigned from the Membership of Nagaland Legislative Assembly on 7th November 2002 and joined Nagaland People’s Front (NPF) and participated in the formation of NPF party in November 2002 and successfully initiated the formation of Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN); he was the advisor NPF and member of the Working Committee in NPF; again contested from the same Constituency Northern Angami-II on NPF Party ticket and ultimately elected as Leader of DAN on 5th March 2003 and appointed as Chief Minister of Nagaland on 6th March 2003 till 3rd January 2008; re-elected to the 11th Nagaland Legislative Assembly on NPF ticket election held on 8th March 2008 and re-elected as Leader of NPF and DAN Legislature Party and appointed as Chief Minster for the second term; again elected to the 12th Nagaland Legislative Assembly on NPF ticket election held on 23rd February 2013 and unanimously re-elected as Leader of the NPF and DAN Legislature Party on 4th March 2013 and appointed Chief Minister for the third consecutive term on 5th March 2013. However resigned from the Chief Minister post on 23rd May 2014 to contest in the Lone Lok Sabha from Nagaland on NPF party ticket seat vacated by Shri C.M Chang on 9th May 2014 and subsequently elected as Member of Parliament for Lok Sabha on 16th May 2014. Later resigned from the Member of Parliament on 9th February 2018 to contest in the state General Election 2018. Elected unopposed from the same Assembly Constituency i.e. Northern Angami-II on NDPP Party ticket election held on 27th February 2018 which he joined on 17th January 2018 after quitting the NPF which he helped found with late Vizol and unanimously elected as the Leader of the People’s Democratic Alliance(PDA) and appointed as the Chief Minister of Nagaland.

- Recipient of Mother Teresa Millennium Award as renowned Social Worker & Political on 29th April 2007;
- Addressed the International Conference on Scheduled Caste and Minorities held in New Delhi on 18th May 2007;
- Delivered Speech on the occasion of 9th World Human Rights Congress and Human Rights Day on 10th December 2007 at India International Centre, New Delhi;
- National Human Rights and Duties Award conferred by the Indian Institute of Human Rights on 10th December 2007;
- Delivered lecture at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi on 18th February, 2006 on the subject “Governance in troubled times- the Nagaland experience”;
- Attended the Asia Pacific Cities Summit held in Incheon, South Korea in 15th September 2009;
- Delivered the keynote Addressed at the World Bamboo Conference held in Bangkok, Thailand on 16th September 2009;
- Delivered Public lecture at Queens University Belfast, UK on 17th October, 2011 on : Governance and Conflict- The Naga Context” becoming the first Chief Minister of the State to deliver a lecture at an international university outside the country;
- Delivered Keynote address at the International Conference on Myanmar Bridging South & South East Asia at Jamia Millia Islamia University, New Delhi 30th January, 2012;
- High Tea, Buckingham Palace, London on 27th July, 2012 on the invitation of HRH Prince Andrew;
- Conferred the Bharat Scouts & Guides Elephant Award by Shri Pranab Mukherjee, the President of India on 8th December 2014 at Darbar Rashtrapati Bhawan, New Delhi;
- On 30th May 1995, survived an assassination attempt when armed persons ambushed his motorcade in Dimapur. He was then serving as PWD Minister of Nagaland. His driver was killed in the ambush and several of his armed bodyguards were injured.
